Look elsewhere (2021)
’Seeing comes before words‘ — John Berger
It is an exercise. Usually my mind comments and names what my eyes perceive. When I create photographs, I enter a different state. There it's all about the sensory impression, about what a camera can do and which motifs could become images. It was a long way to get there, because it takes focus to leave the mind with the sensory impression.
If you like, try it for yourself. Look around you and notice what text appears in your head. Later, concentrate on noticing the field of vision and leave it at that. An intermediate step is to shift the commentary – for example to colors, contrasts, movement, signs, and so on. This allows one to create a layer and move away from dissecting the field of vision with words.
